Mission

Our mission is to provide a nurturing educational environment for children who are deaf or hard of hearing, offering superior education while fostering spoken language and listening skills.  We support students in becoming self confident, articulate, academically competitive learners and community members who demonstrate that hearing loss is a difference, not a disability.

History

Teacher and Students PictureNorthwest School for Hearing-Impaired Children opened in September of 1982. It is the only Preschool – 8th grade private school for deaf and hard of hearing children in the State of Washington.    Most students attend our school at no charge to their families, because dozens of Western Washington school districts contract with NWSFHIC for special education services for their qualifying D/HH students.    We work cooperatively with parents and school district teams to plan Individualized Educational Programs (IEPs) for each of our students.  These teams also cooperate in determining when each student no longer requires the intensive specially designed instruction we offer and is prepared to return to their home school general education program.   Individualized instruction and decision making is fundamental to offering each student an education designed to meet his/her specific educational needs.
